From Fruit Orchard to Botanical Masterpiece
In 1954, Mr. Pisit and Ms. Nongnooch Tansacha bought approximately 1,500 rai (about 600 acres) of land near Pattaya to establish a plantation for fruits such as mangoes, coconuts, and limes. As Ms. Nongnooch travelled abroad, she became enchanted by the beautiful gardens of Europe... and decided that her land would become something far greater and inspiring. It opened in 1980 as the Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden.
Her son Kampon (also spelt "Kampon" or "Kampol") took over management in 1983, extending the garden and augmenting its offerings in nature and culture.
Today, regarded as one of the loveliest gardens in the world, it is also the largest botanical garden in Southeast Asia.
The garden receives thousands of visitors every day and serves as an important plant conservation centre, especially for the cycad family, which has been provided with its own Cycad Gene Bank.
