Phuket lies on the western coast of Thailand on the Andaman Sea. A land of contrasts: pristine nature on one hand, then nightlife on the other; temples of worship alongside modern resorts; serene fishing villages next to bustling street bazaars. The climate is tropical—hot, humid, and monsoonal—so planning becomes paramount. Most tourists stay in Phuket Town, in Patong, Kata, Karon, or Kamala, depending on their moods.
Phuket actually is Thailand's largest island and a favourite amongst travellers. Apart from the beautiful beaches, wonderful markets, colourful temples, and thrilling adventures, it is for every traveller something that he will not forget. Below is a complete guide for what to see and do when you visit Phuket City and its surroundings. Whether you are into culture, relaxation, food, or adventure, there is something to suit your taste.
Patong Beach
Certainly one of the most visited places in Phuket. With a wide expanse of soft sands where you can enjoy swimming depending on the season, quite a lot of places have some numbers of beachfront restaurants and water sports and bars that are a part of their offer. If you want to savour lively beach life, you have got to come here.
Kata & Karon Beaches
Kata Beach: Great to spend time with the family, but it does not have the party atmosphere of Patong. Good for surfing at certain times, yoga retreats, and beach clubs with great food and fun.
Tinier and quieter beaches. Rather nice if the mood is a little slow. Nai Harn is nestled among hills and pine forests, while Ya Nui is tucked away between promontories, lending a cozy feel. Great snorkelling spots during calm sea conditions.
Promthep Cape and Sunset Views
Promthep Cape is one of the places with good views for sunset in Phuket. Just a few minutes' ride from southern beaches, you will enjoy aerial views over the ocean and dramatic colors at dusk. Don't forget to bring your camera.
Buddha as Atimes
Big Buddha is a sitting figure of 45 metres in height made of white marble that stands idyllically on the Nakkerd Hill, which promises panoramic views at its height across Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, and the seascape beyond. A visit here is tranquillising, almost like there is a divine presence through smaller chapels and quiet corners within the site. Modestly attired (covering shoulders and knees).
Wat Chalong
Its importance as a Buddhist temple cannot be compared to any other church in Phuket. The architecture is very mixed and complicated: exquisite golden stupas and murals presenting the Buddhist story. The centre of worship and local festivals site - will be a very good place for one to learn and investigate local beliefs and history
Old Phuket Town
Stroll through the Santo-Portuguese design in Old Phuket Town. Brightly colored shop-houses, colonial frontages, narrow alleyways, some little cafes, and boutiques for shopping. Do not forget to check out Thalang Road, with its attractive pastel buildings, street art, and Sunday walking street market.
Phuket Weekend Market (Naka Market)
The Naka Market, or weekend market, is a place to discover local street food, shop for clothes, crafts, and souvenirs, and appreciate local life up close. Big, busy, and noisy yet definitely with a lot of energy
Khao Phra Thaeo National Park is a heavy place.
Forested areas are one of the few remaining protected areas in Phuket. Many trails for hiking, swimming in waterfalls, and scenic natural vantage points. Ideal for those who love walking through the jungle and spotting wildlife. Watch out for monkeys, insects, and birds.
Giant Tree & Monkey Hill
Monkey Hill is a hill on the outskirts of Phuket Town with views over the city. The trees are gigantic, are surrounded by greenery, and are infested with monkeys (mostly harmless, but one should still show respect). This makes for a pleasant morning walk.
Scuba Diving & Snorkeling
The waters around Phuket and nearby islands are embellished, filled with coral reefs, fish, and even the small reef sharks. Day trips are organized by dive shops to sites such as the Racha Islands, Similan Islands and Phi Phi Islands. Open water courses are offered for novice divers, while snorkelers can explore shallow reefs.
Sea Kayaking and Paddleboarding
In calm bays, in the midst of mangrove forests, or in a sea cave. Kayaking across Phang Nga Bay and paddleboarding in tucked-away lagoons—these are nice, contemplative ways to experience the immediacy of seeing the natural world. Nice for those who want not an adrenaline-pumping outdoor activity but something nice and light.
Jungle Trekking & Ziplining.
Within Phuket are the edges of the rolling rainforest hills. Trails through jungles, crossings over streams, suspension bridges, and ziplining through canopies. Adventure as well as nature. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
ATV & Off-Road Tours.
For those into off-roading: explore rubber plantations, tropical farms, and hills. Some tours feature waterfalls or viewpoints. For those wanting something rugged.
Thai Dishes that Need to Be Tried
Pad Thai
Street Food & Night Markets
Great place to try many local snacks: Phuket Town night market.
Chillva Market: cool stalls, local design goods, and food trucks.
Sunday Street Market in Old Phuket Town: a mix of food, crafts, and portable art.
Beachfront Seafood
As definitely an island, Phuket has seafood that is always fresh and very much in quantity. Have grilled fish, steamed crabs, prawns in garlic pepper, or lobster when feeling really spoiled. Restaurants directly in front of the beach do provide a very nice setting.
Similan Islands
Further still, better visibility and way more pristine reefs. For scuba divers, overnight stays are a must if you can spare 2 to 3 days offshore.
Racha Islands & Coral Island
Closer to Phuket. Great for snorkeling and relaxing with short trips. Less crowded compared to some more famous islands.
Koh Yao Noi & Koh Yao Yai
These are quieter, calmer islands with a more local flavor. Rice paddies, mangroves, simple villages. Great picks if you want to escape tourist crowds.

Getting Around
Respect & Culture
Phuket is way beyond being just a beach destination. Culture, nature, adventure, and relaxation all flourish here in imbalances. Stepping off touristy places often results in the best experiences: trying a roadside food stall, trekking into the rainforest, or foraging into tiny islands most visitors skip by. Plan depending on the weather; be open to spontaneous alternate routes, and you will have memories beyond that of postcard beaches.
